A Web of Alliances in the Global Telecommunication Industry
Unformatted Document Text:  Global Telecommunication 4 Likewise, previous research on structural changes of the telecommunication sector has been mainly centered on the formation of interorganizational alliances such as global strategic alliances (Barley, Feeman & Hybels, 1992; Contractor & Lorange, 1988; Gomes-Casseres, 1996; Nohria. & Garcia-Pont, 1991). Thus, important questions concerning the global telecommunication industry may involve structural characteristics of interorganizational alliances. In this context, the purpose of this study is to describe the structure of global alliance networks in the telecommunication industry. In exploring the structure of alliance networks, this paper uses a structural perspective (Granovetter, 1985; DiMaggio, 1986; Wellman, 1988), which suggests that organizations are embedded in a web of relationships. This theoretical perspective explains how the network of alliances is structured at the organizational level. Theory A Structural Approach to Interorganizational Networks In his seminal study, DiMaggio (1986) concludes that “the last decade in organization theory has been marked by an analytic shift from the study of environments to the study of organizational fields” (p.335). It suggests a need to study the network of interorganizational relationships over simple dyadic relationships, including environmental factors. The concept of interorganizational field has significant implications in understanding the relationship between organization and environment in that “it seeks to locate the precise source of these environmental forces by analyzing the pattern of relationships among the organizations that make up the environment” (Nohria, 1992, p.6).

In this context, the purpose of this study is to describe the structure of global alliance networks in
