Searches through Lexis-Nexis and Dow Jones Interactive were used to identify the first
references to the term in all types of publications. The first reference was made by John Rohs, a
lodging industry analyst, who told the New York Times on January 28, 1991: “Restaurants,
hotels, and gaming establishments seem to be suffering from the CNN effect. People are intensely
interested in the first real-time war in history and they are just planting themselves in front of the
TV” (p. A12).
