An Ideological Analysis of the Guerilla Girls' Satirical Poster of a Movie Parody Entitled:
Unformatted Document Text:  Guerilla Girls’ "Birth of Feminism" Poster 11 exaggerated version of traditional femininity, feminists can convert a form of subordination into an affirmation, and thus challenge and perhaps even transform (Demo, 2000). Mimicry exaggerates norms of femininity to the point of rupturing the very logic that naturalizes the association between femininity, passivity, and objectification (Demo, 2000). The juxtaposition of notable feminist leaders in the guise of actresses famous for their good looks creates a caricature that forces viewers to make the connection that Hollywood does not usually respect women. Equality Now! Banner The "Equality Now!" banner that the actresses sport in front of their crotch is thesite where the juxtaposition of overt sexuality meets the premier message of the women’s movement. The strategic juxtapositions illuminate the incongruity of US societal claims to equal opportunity. "Equality Now!" is a powerful representation of the rhetoric used in the 2 nd Wave Feminist Movement and the Guerilla Girls’ solidify that equality continues to be the essence of feminism. EQUALITY NOW is an international human rights organization dedicated to action for the civil, political, economic and social rights of girls and women. Taking advantage of both traditional and "high-tech" action techniques such as letter-writing and fax campaigns, video witnessing, media events and public information activities, EQUALITY NOW mobilizes action on behalf of individual women whose rights are being violated and promotes women’s rights at local, national and international levels (EQUALITYNOW.com, 2001). This non-profit organization demonstrates the serious importance that "equality now" means for many girls and women worldwide. The issues it addresses serve as an example of how little patriarchy respects those it oppresses. At the most basic level, all of the Guerilla Girls strategies of incongruity undermine the assumption that equality has been achieved (Demo, 2000).
