An Ideological Analysis of the Guerilla Girls' Satirical Poster of a Movie Parody Entitled:
Unformatted Document Text:  Guerilla Girls’ "Birth of Feminism" Poster 12 Big Budget Hollywood Film Players At the bottom of the poster, the Guerilla Girls include some of the biggest names in mainstream media and this completes the parody. The satirical movie, "The Birth of Feminism," is a Jerry Bruckheimer Production; it is directed by Oliver Stone, and the screenplay is by Joe Eszterhas. Jerry Bruckheimer is a former advertising executive who moved to film production in the early 1970s. Bruckheimer set the trend for big-budget, action/adventure films, which dominated Hollywood’s output through the 1980s. Despite a move from major studios to fewer "blockbuster" productions, Bruckheimer continues to produce expensive, mainstream hits that star popular, macho, male heroes (Hollywood.com, 2001). Stone is well known as a director who creates dramatic interpretations of history, particularly the recent history of the 1960s and 1970s. Stone is incredibly successful, though controversial. Many believe that he distorts history and that poorly informed filmgoers are unaware that Stone is interpreting history based on his personal world-view and biases. Stone said in an interview with Harry Kreisler of the Institute of International Studies at U.C. Berkeley, Well, that was a point made not by me but by Hayden White in Topics of Discourse. He just makes the point that in narrative histories there are too many facts for any historian to deal with, and there’s a natural selection of omission that goes on. I study history in order to give an interpretation. There are just too many facts to include in any historical work, if you have it all before you. I am not trying to be a historian and a dramatist; I’m a dramatist, a dramatic historian, or one who does a dramatic interpretation of history (Mr. Brown’smovies.com, 1997). The Guerilla Girls choice of Stone as the director of their satirical movie contributes to their lambasting Hollywood for demeaning historical movements. It indicates their lack of confidence
