Effective Computer-mediated Communication Using Hypertext:
Introducing Expanding Hypertext—Are They Adventurous?
The purpose of this study was to investigate how text formats affect a user’s
preference for, disorientation with, and comfort level based on his or her adventurous
tendency. An experimental study (a post-test only group), evaluating three variations of
computer text formats, was conducted in which two hundred one college students
participated. A new hybrid hypertext, expanding hypertext, was introduced and investigated
in this study. The participants liked the paged hypertext best, the expanding hypertext second,
and the scorlling text third. The participants’ adventurousness exhibited an interaction with
the text formats on the participants’ disorientation.
