Equal Trust: An Experiment Exploring the Impact of Interactivity and Sources on Individuals' Perceptions of Credibility for Online News Stories
Unformatted Document Text:  24 Conclusions In summary, the emergence of online news on the Internet raises many critical conceptual and practical issues surrounding our understanding of how people make judgments about the news. While the temptation may be to expect the same relationships and patterns as those previously reported in studies of traditional media outlets, a growing body of research is demonstrating that this may not be the case. The blurring definitions of source and the increased significance of interactivity appear to be two influential factors shaping the differences. Additional research is needed to explore these two forces in the context of other types of online communication. Notes 1 It should be noted that when the participation factor is included in the ANOVA tests, the text-only condition is removed because the picture gallery was only available in the moderate and high interactivity conditions.

Conclusions
In summary, the emergence of online news on the Internet raises many critical conceptual
and practical issues surrounding our understanding of how people make judgments about
the news. While the temptation may be to expect the same relationships and patterns as
those previously reported in studies of traditional media outlets, a growing body of
research is demonstrating that this may not be the case. The blurring definitions of
source and the increased significance of interactivity appear to be two influential factors
shaping the differences. Additional research is needed to explore these two forces in the
context of other types of online communication.
Notes
1
It should be noted that when the participation factor is included in the ANOVA tests, the text-only
condition is removed because the picture gallery was only available in the moderate and high interactivity
conditions.
