The official discourse states that assembly electronic equipments require fine muscles, acute eyesight and nimble fingers. Women are hired because they tend to make a more docile and tractable labor than men, who tend to organize themselves to demand better working conditions. The huge contribution of women in the economy and labor in the city of Juárez has not been translated into equality in the work environment and the household. In other words, the rise of women's earnings does not necessarily mean that their authority and status will be better in their family and their job place. The maquiladora industry has been as a respectable option for uneducated working class young women who formerly had few choices such as being petty clerical workers, domestic employers and prostitutes. However, the incorporation of women into the industrial sector has been perceived as having a negative effect upon family life and traditional moral values. “Juárez is a city of women” said to me Esther Chávez Cano in July, 2002, the director of the casa AMIGA, an Center for battered women in Cd. Juárez. Esther told me that when she migrated from Chihuahua City to the border, she was surprised by the number of young migrant women who work. “The paradox,” Esther said, “is that although women are the core of the maquiladora workforce, working women’s subordination and exploitation is more present than ever. Transnational capital makes transnational exploitation possible, and so we have a kind of poverty that is racialized and that is feminine.” We have a situation where selectivity is being exercised very conveniently. it opens and closes different windows and maintains and erects walls in women’s lives. Zulma Mendez, a social researcher of the Universidad Autonoma de Cd. Juarez, explained to me the relationship between the maquiladora industry and migration to Cd.
