Young migrants in the borderlands: femicide in Cd. Juárez and the state discourse and initiatives on female working class, brown citizens in the border.
Unformatted Document Text:  18 killings. Women all over the world are abused and killed every day by their partners. This is an alarming situation, especially if one considers the effects on child survivors of these grotesque deeds. The social and economic situation of working people in Juarez is so desperate that Sonia Torres told me in July, 2002: “we even say that women who appear in the statistics have the advantage of being in the missing or killed list. Because there are many women in the community who have died slowly in this poverty and continue to do so. In conditions where they cannot count on somebody. Here people feel completely alone. Nobody takes care of them. The conditions of women is not in the agenda of nobody. Nobody is interested in what happens with their lives. That is what we mean. Many women die slowly due to many reasons….. b.- Personal responsibility of women to take care of themselves. Most women activists in Juárez explained to me that what killed women was not their lack of moral values, their decision to go out at night or dressing in a sexually provocative way, as it has been suggested by the ex-governor Francisco Barrio and the current governor Patricio MartĂnez. When one analyzes the details of the women who have been killed in Cd. Juarez, the way they were dressed and the time when they disappeared, such discourses are insulting, coercive and quite dangerous. Most women were wearing jeans when they were killed, they were on their way to schools, leaving their jobs or transiting the city at the end or beginning of the dangerous shift hours, they were kidnapped in areas where there was no public transportation to the slums where they lived.
