Bonjour ŕ l’euro! An agenda-setting study of attitudes towards the new currency in France

Considering the fact that the euro is introduced simultaneously in 12 countries, similarities should exist between their public agendas. The next hypothesis that this study examines is: H7: The higher the amount of positive coverage of an attribute of the euro in the French press, the greater the acceptance of that attribute by the Eurozone public. Methodology Sample For studying agenda setting in France, Le Monde newspaper was selected because it is “widely-read and most influential French newspaper” and it “spreads the image of France as a pillar of the European Union” 25 . It was chosen because of its high quality and its large circulation. Ghanem makes the distinction between “quality” and “popular” news outlets. Quoting Ericson, Baranek and Chan, she writes that “quality” newspapers “tend to offer more context in their stories while the popular papers relied more heavily on an emotional understanding” of the issue. 26 Using a constructed week, the authors chose newspapers from four weeks (November 15 th to December 15 th , 2001). The timeframe covered by the constructed week is within 5 to 8 weeks prior to the date of the public opinion polls. The usual four week recommended timeframe was extended due to the Christmas and New Year celebrations that fell exactly four weeks prior to the public opinion poll. Le Monde does not issue a Monday paper. Therefore, the previous Sunday issue (November 18 th ) was used instead of the Monday (November 19 th ) from the constructed week. Also, Le Monde issued the Le Monde/L’Euro supplement on November 23 rd that was sold with the current daily issue of the newspaper during that whole week. The supplement was analyzed
