Bonjour leuro! An agenda-setting study of attitudes towards the new currency in France
Unformatted Document Text:  Bonjour à l’euro! 14 (likelihood of people wanting to maintain the former national currency), perceived loss of national cultural symbol (the national currency), perceived plus for personal finances given by the perceived elimination of banking charges once the euro is introduced, perceived contribution to national economic growth, perceived contribution to price stability, perceived contribution to employment, perceived value of euro introduction in general. An example of a positive coverage on losing the national currency as a cultural symbol is saying that “the identification between currency and nation is obsolete.” 27 The nine attributes included in the Eurozone category are: perceived europenity (whether the introduction of the euro coins and notes in the Eurozone is beneficial for the adopting countries), perceived plus for tourism in the Eurozone, perceived plus for purchases in the Eurozone, perceived plus for price comparisons in the Eurozone, perceived plus for money circulation in the Eurozone, perceived similarity of the euro to the American dollar, perceived contribution to leveling Eurozone economies, perceived euro/USD parity concerns, and perceived contribution to European unity (the euro is “the first European object” 28 ). For example, a perceived plus for purchases in the Eurozone is that it is “[…] not needed any more to pass by an exchange office before buying.” 29 Coders recorded each selected paragraph from the chosen articles on coding sheets. Attributes of the euro introduction were coded if directly stated in the paragraph. The implications or underlying meanings of the paragraphs were not taken into consideration when coding. For example, the following paragraph was coded as positive for “perceived europenity” and no further speculations about what she meant were made (like beneficial for employment as a result of the political consensus): “....Emilie, 19 years old, stops for several minutes her work to tell us her concerns.
