Reading electronic mail at the office: Exploring how and why organizational members read information

This means that they have to achieve a certain goal, but they can decide for themselves how they are going to achieve that goal. The members of both teams have flexible workspaces in their office which means that their space in the office can vary each day. Furthermore, the members of the different teams work together in different projects, so they are well acquainted with each other. Organization C has over 1200 employees. Its main goal is to provide former and current employees in the healthcare and social sector with a pension package. This organization participated in the study with 30 organizational members from three teams. One of the teams is occupied with the core-business of the organization, which is providing pension packages. Organizational members of this team have quite well-defined job descriptions, which imply that they are not involved in the description of their main job responsibilities. This means that they just have to do the job which they are hired for. Furthermore, most of their time they perform routine jobs. All employees of this team are situated in one common room together with their immediate supervisor. The other two teams are staff teams with their own specialism, in order to provide the organization services other than the core-business. Every employee or small group of employees has their own specialism. Consequently, members of both teams do not have well-defined job responsibilities. This means that they have to achieve a certain goal, but they can decide for themselves how they are going to achieve that goal. The employees of both teams are, contrary to the other team, not situated in one common room but either have their own room or share a room with a few others. The managers of these teams have their own room. The three teams do not work together that much, and they are located at different places in the office building. Consequently, the members of the different teams are not so well acquainted with each other.
