The free events listed in the quarterly publication include birding trips, garden club meetings, and children’s outings. A Spanish translation of all events is on the reverse side of the calendar. • In addition to providing free access to its wetland preserves across the UK, a wetland trust also provides use of its conference and board room facilities to its corporate members. Also worth noting is a membership sign-up form on the backs of all its employees’ business cards. • A trust engaged in protecting endangered species has partnerships with several wildlife sanctuaries around the UK in which members enjoy free access to the grounds. Sign up sheets are available at all park entrances and membership is effective immediately so new recruits can use their memberships to get in the park that same day. • The Boston-based agency has taken the initiative to sponsor several lectures a year, given by prominent authors and professors on environmentally-related topics and sends invitations to established as well as potential members. It has a sign-in sheet and staff members on hand at these free events. • In addition to its somewhat aggressive tactics of trading membership lists with other organizations (not necessarily environmental), a council protecting rural areas around the UK has a members-only section to its website, complete with sign-in password. This allows it to communicate directly to its members and provides a further incentive for curious non-members. Keep Your Ear to the Ground The timing and location of a membership recruiting campaign can make a substantial difference in attracting members and their financial contributions. “We make an effort to be up-to-date on all environmentally-critical issues and be ready to pounce on those geographic areas to show residents how we are responding to that specific threat,” said one UK interviewee. “In a city like London where the wilderness is not a visible commodity, we took a lot of initiative to gain visibility on national concerns like the farmer’s plight during the hoof and mouth disaster.
