Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances
One way to accomplish the goal of cross media ownership is through mergers,

acquisitions and strategic alliances. They represent different ways that companies can join

(or partner together) to achieve increased market share, diversify product line and/or create

greater efficiency of operation (Chan-Olmsted, 1998; Gershon, 2001). The decades of

the 1990’s and early 21

century witnessed an unprecedented number of international mergers

and acquisitions that has brought about a major realignment of business players. Concerns

for antitrust violations seem to be overshadowed by a general acceptance that such changes

are inevitable in a global economy. The result has been a consolidation of players in all areas

of business, including banking, aviation, pharmaceuticals, media and telecommunications.
