Fake intimacy: Strategies of engagement in Israeli gossip columns

As rich and famous as she is, miss Albin is turned into a laughing stock. Ridiculing the celebrities continued to be a major mark of Shlihut Katlanit regardless of the identity of the writer, whose names appear in the column, allowing for a comparison between individual styles. Gil Riva began writing the column in 1997 and continued until he publicly resigned in November 2001, with a reflexive column with the best and worse of his years in the paper, his style has been one of sharp irony and he became the horror of those he wrote about. One of Mr. Riva’s contributions to the genre is the use of new words of his own creation (or made up by others), popularized by his column. The following item from March 3, 2000 demonstrate this point: 9. …Barkan 10 [a models agent] told Reshef [TV show host] he has some kolavit [hanger, a model], whom he’s been storing for future use since she was twelve, and that she is the real next thing. Reshef was convinced, and next week she’ll be on his show. One moment before everyone else we’ll tell you that her name is Moran Gross, 175 cm of sense and 49 kg of sensibility. She appeared in Vogue and in March she’ll have a cover in the Italian Anna. She had braces on her teeth once, but it doesn’t matter. Kolavit, a female form of the word for hanger, is a creation of gossip columnist. As a metonym of what a model is, the word objectifies the person: all a model does is being a decorative hanger for the designer. 11 Furthermore, the model just like the hanger 10 Barkan is known for discovering his models in a variety of ways. This story includes also some references to his relations with other famous models. 11 The word is also used in the masculine form for male models as well but it is found more frequently in reference to women
