Fake intimacy: Strategies of engagement in Israeli gossip columns
Unformatted Document Text:  knowledge assembled from a variety of fields: linguistic, cultural, contextual, social, etc. The enigmatic columns require higher level of involvement by the reader, but also create a sort of intimacy with the columnist who gives clues for solving the riddles. This joint venture of columnist and reader, on several levels, replicates the “behind the back” style of interpersonal gossip. The Israeli identity of the columns is evident not only in the language used and the identity of the celebrities; the direct style of address, “if you don’t like it, turn the page over,” replicates the notorious Israeli Dugri speech (Katriel 1987). The intimacy and closeness of Israeli society in general, perhaps allows the columnist to voice criticism in a more direct way than elsewhere. This assumption, however, requires a comparative study with the language and style of other gossip columns.

of interpersonal gossip.
