Despite the importance of learning warning signs, few articles discussed how people could detect changes in their skin that may require follow-up with a physician or dermatologist. Only one-fourth (222 of 880) of all articles discussed detection or diagnoses of skin cancer. Of these articles, only 21.6% (48 of 222) discussed self-detection of skin cancer. Put another way, only 5.4% (48 of 880) of all skin cancer articles even mentioned that people should be checking their own skin. Many of these references came when discussing melanoma (60.4%-- 29 of 48). When self-detection for skin cancer was discussed, specific warning signs for which people should be aware were discussed in only half the stories (24 of 48). For example, of the 29 stories primarily about melanoma that discussed self-detection, only 55.2% (16 of 29) of the stories reviewed the ABCDs or articulated the warning signs for melanoma. Similarly, only 30.9% (96 of 310) of articles about melanoma

Secondary prevention
The vast majority of skin cancers are curable if detected early. Despite the importance of
learning warning signs, few articles discussed how people could detect changes in their skin
that may require follow-up with a physician or dermatologist. Only one-fourth (222 of 880) of
all articles discussed detection or diagnoses of skin cancer. Of these articles, only 21.6% (48 of
222) discussed self-detection of skin cancer. Put another way, only 5.4% (48 of 880) of all skin
cancer articles even mentioned that people should be checking their own skin. Many of these
references came when discussing melanoma (60.4%-- 29 of 48). When self-detection for skin
cancer was discussed, specific warning signs for which people should be aware were discussed
in only half the stories (24 of 48). For example, of the 29 stories primarily about melanoma that
