Given that public support – either indirectly or directly in the form of referendums – is
a prerequisite for successful future European integration, the news media framing of these
issues plays an increasingly important role in the this process. As the enlargement of the
European Union towards Middle- and Eastern-Europe becomes center stage in the current
EU member states and in the ascension countries, news media is likely to be a key player in
influencing public support – or aversion – towards the enlargement.
