'Put the Cheetos Down': Camouflaging the Institutionality of an Interaction

The Institutional Site, the Talk Occasion and the Data “Nutrition Corporation,” a large organization located in the Western United States, produces and sells nutritional products nationally and internationally 1 . Like many entrepreneurial success stories, Nutrition Corporation began in the founder’s garage, developing rapidly to its current form as a multimillion dollar business. The company takes pride in its nutritional products and displays them throughout the buildings. The displays "remind" employees of the company's commitment to helping people to be healthy and fit through exercise and nutritional products. This commitment is reinforced in multiple ways. First, the company created a program in which lay persons send pictures of themselves “before and after” they began consuming the product and exercising. Pictures of particularly impressive accomplishments are placed on the “wall of fame.” Hundreds of pictures on the building's walls underscore the success of the organization in affecting people’s lives positively. Secondly, the company provides a large fitness center for its employees, one comparable to gyms with membership packages that include weight lifting equipment, and treadmills and bikes. Finally, the organization makes available free products to its employees. The break room holds several enormous plastic containers that contain Nutrition Corporation products (e.g., powders and shakes).
