Quotes and Agendas: Israelis vs. Palestinians on Media, Public and Policy Agendas
Unformatted Document Text:  Fan-Page 7 Policy agenda. Although it would have been of great interest to explore the factors affecting relative interest of the United States in Palestinians and Arab nations, a complete analysis would need to include geopolitical and economic considerations that are beyond the scope of this paper. However, this shift in the agenda is not surprising as will be spelled out in the Discussion section below. Cross-nation comparison: Setting of the Israeli/Palestinian agenda in other regions of the world So far, this paper has focused on the agenda in the United States. Data News Media Stories Long term and high volume content analytic studies involve large amounts of text and are impractical without a computerized method. That means that the input text must be in electronic form. One advantage of news wires is that their contents have often been archived electronically for longer time periods than individual news sources like newspapers, magazines, and television and radio transcripts. In addition, influential news wires transmit dispatches in English as well as the wires’ native languages. Given these considerations, the English language versions of the following news sources were examined in this study for the extent to which they allow Palestinians and Israelis to express their viewpoints: The Associated Press (AP) is the dominant news wire in the United States and was therefore used to represent the American press. The Unites States has been Israel’s most consistent supporter since its creation and therefore might be expected to have a relatively greater pro-Israeli stance. Moreover, the largest Jewish population in the world is in the United States, outnumbering even Israel, the Jewish state. Moreover, the AP has broad impact on news outside the United States and is frequently cited in Israeli and Arabic media. Agence France Presse (AFP) is the dominant news wire in France and was therefore used to represent the French press. Unlike the strong Israeli ties with the United States, France has had a long history of relations with Arab countries with especially close relationships to Syria and Lebanon, dating back to colonial times. Also, France has been actively involved with northwest Africa including Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. As a result, many French residents derive from these three countries with Algeria being the most prominent. Finally, there is a very large Muslim population in France, estimated to be between 6 and 8 millions. Therefore, it might be expected that the AFP would be relatively more sympathetic to the Palestinians.
