Click here, kids! Advertising practices on popular children's Web sites
Unformatted Document Text:  Advertising on Children’s Web Sites 17 adults (N=88). Nearly half of the ads (49%, N=329) on the Web sites belonged to the host sites. The majority of these ad sites (63%, N=417) carried additional ads on the initial page. Seventy-four percent of the ad sites (N=492) had a link to their privacy policy, in which 77 percent of these links (N=379) were placed at the bottom of the page. The majority of these privacy links (77%, N=379) used smaller font sizes than those of the content letters, but they also used distinguishable colors which made them stood out from the background. Thirteen percent of the links (N=65) used the same font size and used distinguishable colors. Only five percent of ads led to sites that used both larger font sizes and distinguishable colors for their links to privacy policy (N=22). When a child clicked on an ad icon on a Web site and was led to an ad page, thirteen percent of the times the child would encounter collection of personal information on that initial page. The vast majority of the ad sites would collect personal information from children if not directly on the initial page. Among all the advertising Web sites/page, nearly a quarter of them were for activities, twenty-one percent of them were informational sites, sixteen percent of them were comprehensive Web sites, and 14 percent of them were for shopping purposes (see Table 1). --------------------------- Table 1 About Here ---------------------------
