All items were combined to make a composite scale for operational competence. Interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is measured by the expatriate’s interpersonal ties with members of the host society/ethnic community/other groups, the intensity of their informal/formal social relationships with host nationals as well as coethnics/other groups. The items from Y. Y. Kim's (2002) measure of interpersonal communication are adapted and modified. Items include: 1) percentages of casual acquaintances whom one knows well enough to greet and talk with when one sees them (with categories of Americans/Koreans/other group of people other than Americans and Koreans); 2) percentages of casual friends one visits and with whom one engages in social activities (with categories of Americans/Koreans/other group of people other than Americans and Koreans); 3) percentages of close friends with whom a person shares private and personal problems (with categories of Americans/Koreans/other group of people other than Americans and Koreans). Each scale item such as American casual acquaintances, American casual friends, and American close friends was analyzed as a variable for the host interpersonal communication respectively. Likewise, each of the Korean casual acquaintances, Korean casual friends, and Korean close friends was regarded as one variable for the ethnic interpersonal communication for the analysis. Mass Communication. As one aspect of social communication, the host mass media and the ethnic media consumption were assessed. The scale items are adapted from Kim's (1976) study and modified. This measurement scale, as originally used by Kim (1976), proved to be highly reliable. The response categories mostly use 6-point item scales (e.g., 1 = none; 6 = more than 90
