competence score while on the knowledge of host culture score, the sample had a mean of 4.53 (SD =
1.12). On the adaptation motivation score, the sample had a mean of 5.18 (SD = .85). On operational
competence score, the sample had a mean of 4.67 (SD = 1.01). In three levels of interpersonal ties (i.e.,
acquaintances, casual friends, and close friends), the respondents show more ties with their own ethnic
groups than host people. In the level of acquaintances, the respondents had ties with Koreans (M =
54.31%, SD = 23.46%) while they had ties with Americans (M = 36.34%, SD = 24.55%). In the level of
casual friends, the respondents had more ties with Koreans (M = 75.59%, SD = 21.06%) while with
Americans (M = 17.32%, SD = 16.56). In the level of close friends, the respondents had more ties with
Koreans (M = 82.94%, SD = 25.51) while with Americans (M = 9.14%, SD = 13.75). With regard to
mass media communication, each host mass media had scores: American newspaper/magazines (M =
2.90, SD = 1.07), American radio (M = 3.35, SD = 1.24), American video (M = 1.79, SD = .68),
American TV (M = 4.44, SD = 1.36), American movies (M = 2.64, SD = 1.15), English-language website
(M = 3.85, SD = 1.42). In addition to host mass media, the ethnic mass media had scores: Korean
newspapers/magazines (M = 3.05, SD = 1.13), Korean Radio (M = 1.93, SD = 1.24), Korean video (M =
2.05, SD = .93), Korean TV (M = 2.25, SD = 1.41), Korean-language website (M = 4.02, SD = 1.42).
For the dependent variable, the mean of psychological health score was 4.76 (SD = .81) for satisfaction
scale while the mean for alienation scale was 2.99 (SD = 1.02). As a background variable, on the family
adjustment scale, the sample had a mean of 5.06 (SD = 1.21).
A simple bivariate correlation analysis was performed to test hypothesized relationships among
the three dimensions of host communication competence, interpersonal communication, and mass
communication. A multiple regression analysis was performed to test the relationships between the three
dimensions of host communication competence, interpersonal communication, mass communication,
length of stay, and psychological health. For statistical analysis, as a dependent variable, the aspect of
satisfaction was used as psychological health.
