Black and white, male and female: Racial and Gender Differences in Adolescents' TV Diets
Unformatted Document Text:  Black and White 11 2002). This means that approximately 16% of all households with TV (TVHHs) watched Friends that week. During the same week, the share was 25.0 (“Network prime-time averages,” 2002). This means that of all the households using television at the time (HUTs), 25% of them were tuned in to Friends. This 25% was used as a guideline to begin thinking about how many shows to evaluate. The top 20 network shows currently airing on television have ratings ranging from 9.6 to 18.6. We, therefore, chose a conservative approach by including only those shows that at least one-third of each sub group (Black and White males and females) viewed regularly. In other words, if a most-watched show on television secures only 10% of the audience, our 30% guideline indicates a strong following within that audience segment. The 30% cut-off yielded a total of 92 shows watched by at least one-third of one of the four demographic groups.
