Black and white, male and female: Racial and Gender Differences in Adolescents' TV Diets
Unformatted Document Text:  Black and White 13 shows, none of the percentages of regular viewers comes close to the large proportions of the Black teens who are watching regularly. Table 1 About Here In contrast, as can be seen in Table 2, there were only three shows on the list that were watched regularly by Whites that were not also watched by more than 30 percent of the Blacks. All three of those shows showcase Whites. Table 2 About Here Gender differences were less dramatic than racial differences. As is shown in Table 3, only six shows were watched primarily by girls and by fewer than 30 percent of the boys. All five of the six shows watched more regularly by the girls focus on female characters and families, and the sixth, “Wonderful World of Disney” often includes stories of families with adolescents. Table 3 About Here As previous studies have found, boys are more likely to be watching sports programming than girls. More than 30 percent of both Black and White boys reported watching Monday Night Football and ESPN Sports Center regularly while fewer than 10 percent of the girls said they watched. Jackass and King of the Hill have been called adolescent male humor shows and they live up to their reputations according to these responses with more than 40 percent of the males in this sample saying they watch them regularly, although more than one-fifth of the girls said they watch these shows regularly, too. (See Table 4). Table 4 About Here
