Researcher and Therapist: The Conversations of the Qualitative Interview
Unformatted Document Text:  11 Conversation foundational alignment that enables further exploration into a topic. It allows for the probing that therapists often perform when encouraging clients to explore an issue more fully (Egan, 1994). The following sequence of dialog illustrates how the empathic responses of the interviewer encourage extended dialog. [. . .] When I think of gay lifestyle, I think of insecurity. I think of that good old word promiscuity. When I say promiscuity, I’m trying to think of a more general term than that because I don’t mean only just sleeping . . . I mean, because it kind of goes around, I think of bad morals. I: Like slut, tramp . . . things like that. P: Yeah. I think of, I just think of bad morals. I think of, dare I say, despair. I don’t know, just like doomed. You just don’t, you know, your’re just doomed to this lifestyle. That’s it’s not accepted. I think of, I mean, it doesn’t apply to me, though. Because for myself, I don’t think of myself in that way because I know I’m different. What I hate to say is that, and I think in the majority, and I’m not saying that I’m right or wrong, but I think that the majority of the people are like that. I have rarely, seldomly come across decent people. I: So it sounds like there’s a lot of loneliness. P: Loneliness, that’s a big thing.
