Researcher and Therapist: The Conversations of the Qualitative Interview
Unformatted Document Text:  13 Conversation Exemplar 2 I: How does work fit into lesbian identity? P: For me personally, I have had great experience with work and being who I am. I haven’t had to pretend that I am someone that I am not. I can openly talk about what I did over the weekend, not in any details necessarily, but I can say that I have been on vacation and she and I did that and she and I experienced that as opposed to making up a fake significant other which a lot of people have to do, including my wife. If they are not seriously people oriented, community oriented type of career situations, then they are more likely to go with that moral majority and say that being gay and lesbian is not an okay thing. You wouldn’t want anyone to know that about you. I personally haven’t had to experience that but, I have it right here because when I go to work, I can be free to talk about who I am and what I am doing. But I can come home and have to deal with the exact opposite situation if one of her co-workers called or comes by or something, and it makes me angry. I: It sounds like you don’t think that being gay or lesbian is bad. P: Definitely I: It sounds like you have had all the experiences that the other people have gone through. What is the difference? What makes this easier for you than someone else?

I:
How does work fit into lesbian identity?
P:
For me personally, I have had great experience with work and being who I am. I
haven’t had to pretend that I am someone that I am not. I can openly talk about
what I did over the weekend, not in any details necessarily, but I can say that I
have been on vacation and she and I did that and she and I experienced that as
opposed to making up a fake significant other which a lot of people have to do,
including my wife. Different work situations and different levels of, I don’t know
quite how to put this. I think different types of careers incorporate their own
different morality within them. If they are not seriously people oriented,
community oriented type of career situations, then they are more likely to go with
that moral majority and say that being gay and lesbian is not an okay thing. You
wouldn’t want anyone to know that about you. I personally haven’t had to
experience that but, I have it right here because when I go to work, I can be free to
talk about who I am and what I am doing. But I can come home and have to deal
with the exact opposite situation if one of her co-workers called or comes by or
something, and it makes me angry.
I:
It sounds like you don’t think that being gay or lesbian is bad.
P: Definitely
I:
It sounds like you have had all the experiences that the other people have gone
through. What is the difference? What makes this easier for you than someone
else?
