Researcher and Therapist: The Conversations of the Qualitative Interview
Unformatted Document Text:  20 Conversation that is a gay characteristic. I think that is men. Men are visually stimulated, don’t you think? I: Some. I am not particularly that much of a visual person . . . P: I remember thinking back in junior high school “look at her ass, you know?” That is just a male bonding thing to stand back and ogle girls, and men are boastful about sexual things. I think a great many of them have lives that revolve around sex, heterosexual and homosexual. I: Some men’s lives, not mine. You might notice that I kind of skip around when I am interviewing? P: Am I talking too much? I: You are talking just right. If anytime you want to ask me something . . . My own self-criticism of my interviews is that I wanted to be more active in my interviews and I am not and that is partly because of my own job, what I do. The bulk of it is talking to people and listening, so it is hard for me to come out of that mode of listening and thinking and actually put myself back in it. This is what this research project is supposed to be about, so if you want to ask me what I think, or ask a question, just ask. That is ok. I should have said that to begin with. So, is there anything you wanted to ask? P: Not right now. I: So, jumping around now. I heard you talk about community, looking for some place to go other than bars, coffee shops, this and that. I am wondering what is the importance of community and how does it fit into your world?
