Examining the Correlates of Physical Activity for Whites, Blacks and Hispanics in a National Sample: The Role of Demographics, Social Connections and Self-Efficacy
Unformatted Document Text:  14 income social connections physical activity). Female Hispanics and those with higher income have greater sense of control of their lives, which in turn lead to regular physical activity. As such, social connections is a more important factor than self-efficacy in mediating the influence of demographics on physical activity for Hispanics. With regard to African Americans, the influence of self-efficacy on physical activity is mediated through social connections (gender self-efficacy social connections physical activity). African men have a greater sense of control of their lives, are more socially connected, and engage in regular physical activity. Discussion Structural equation modeling provides support for the hypothesized model on the relationships among demographics, social connections, self-efficacy and physical activity across Whites, Blacks and Hispanics. Consistent with previous studies, gender, age, income and education have been shown to be significant determinants of physical activity. This study also employs a major construct, self-efficacy, from protection motivation theory to examine its mediating influence on physical activity. Just as self-efficacy mediates the influence of social cognitive factors on behavioral intention in protection motivation theory, self-efficacy mediates the influence of demographics in predicting physical activity across race in this research.
