Examining the Correlates of Physical Activity for Whites, Blacks and Hispanics in a National Sample: The Role of Demographics, Social Connections and Self-Efficacy
Unformatted Document Text:  15 Self-efficacy is operationalized as the feeling of being in charge of your life. This construct only measures people’s general sense of self-efficacy -- how self-efficacious people feel in general. It differs from domain specific exercise self-efficacy, which is how efficacious people feel in exercise domain. Interpretation of how self-efficacy and social connections influence the level of physical activity has to take into consideration that self-efficacy, measured in a general sense, differs from exercise self-efficacy. Overall, the results show that education predicted physical activity for Whites, Blacks and Hispanics - the more education, the more physical activity. Income and education are salient predictors of self-efficacy for Blacks and Hispanics respectively. Self-efficacy mediates the influence of demographics on physical activity among Blacks (gender self efficacy social connections physical activity; income self efficacy social connections physical activity). For Hispanics, social connections is an important mediating variable for physical activity. For Whites, both social connections and self-efficacy influence how regular one exercise. Given the importance of the mediating influence of social connections and self-efficacy for Blacks and Hispanics, health communication campaigns should segment populations by both demographics and social cognitive factors and offer different interventions for different race.
