Examining the Correlates of Physical Activity for Whites, Blacks and Hispanics in a National Sample: The Role of Demographics, Social Connections and Self-Efficacy
Unformatted Document Text:  6 annually to a representative (quota) sample of the adult U.S. population. The Life Style Survey is "the longest running demographic study in the country next to the Yankelovich Monitor and … the most highly detailed consumer psychographic database currently available" (Piirto, 1991). The 1999 response rate was around 68 percent (3388 responded out of approximately 5000 surveys distributed; 1527 males and 1861 females). There were a total of 3017 valid cases for statistical modeling, among which 2412 (80%) were Whites, 285 (9.5%) were Blacks, 226 (7.5%) were Hispanics and 94 (3%) were Asians or Pacific Islanders. This racial distribution in the sample is similar to that of the general population in which 82.3, 12.8, 11.5 and 4% were Whites, Blacks, Americans with Hispanic origins, and Asians respectively (Brunner, 2001). The Asian sample was dropped from the analysis due to small sample size (<100). The White, Black and Hispanic samples were adequate to examine the hypothesized model. In general, a sample size of more than a hundred cases is needed to ensure the stability of parameter estimates, as larger samples have smaller standard errors (Anderson & Gering, 1998). Structural equation modeling We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) with maximum likelihood estimation (ML) using LISREL 8.52 to explore the relationships among race, gender, age, education, income, social connections, self-efficacy and physical activity. ML is an appropriate method for the estimation of complex models based on the standard covariance approach. This
