Effects of Ideal Body Images--Translatable Across Gender and Culture?
Unformatted Document Text:  14 significant difference in self-esteem between control group (M = 5.12, SD = .79) and ideal female model group (M = 4.77, SD = .69), t (33) = 1.40, p > .05. For female subjects, there was no significant difference in evaluation of body image between control group (M = 4.15, SD = .90) and ideal male model group (M = 4.53, SD = 1.02), t (54) = - 1.45, p > .05, and no significant difference in self-esteem between control group (M = 4.94, SD = .86) and ideal male model group (M = 4.89, SD = 1.03), t (54) = .20, p > .05. Our exploratory examination of cross-sex effect concerning with the influence of idealized body images in advertisements upon people’s perception of self-worth, therefore, did not produce statistically significant results in this study. Chinese college students’ evaluation of body image and self-esteem were not influenced by exposure to idealized body images of the opposite sex in advertisements. For male subjects, significant difference was found in body image between urban area group (M = 4.40, SD = .91) and rural area group (M = 3.80, SD = .81), t (57) = 2.46, p < .05, which means Chinese male college students from urban areas
