Radio in Accra: A confluence of National and Traditional Representations.
Unformatted Document Text:  Radio in Accra 20 emphasized that the law was repealed in order to expand the boundaries of freedom (“Ghana Criminal Libel Law Repealed,”2001). It is not improbable to harbor the notion that other African countries may be having similar media experiences. It will be worthwhile to study how representations and media symbols are evolving in other sub-Saharan African countries in the twenty-first century, as new policies and technologies offer greater opportunities to content creators to reach larger audiences across local and international boundaries. Of particular interest to this author is a study of how DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) via satellite introduced to Africa by WorldSpace’s would impact programming and representations. In the year 2000, WorldSpace Corporation launched DAB broadcast to Africa through it AfriSat satellite. Currently WorldSpace’ programming is delivered to audience through special receivers over a wide geographic area covering many African countries. WorldSpace’ DAB is bringing diverse media content to a large audience of different ethnic and national origin. Many of the content originate from cultures different from the audience and it will be insightful to find out how this extensive service across national boundaries is received. Perhaps the hybrid programming of Ghanaian radio could offer some clues to how to reach diverse, and multi cultural groups.
