A chatroom ethnography: Evolution of community, norms, nonverbal communication
Unformatted Document Text:  A Chatroom Ethnography 20 Appendix A further demonstrates another distinctive characteristic of this observation from the others. Definite boundaries could be drawn around the conversations in this observation, suggesting that there were implicit norms managing the flow of conversation in the room. Certainly, there were people who entered the conversation, often with the age sex introduction; however, these people were less successful in engaging in the conversation when they introduced themselves in the middle of one of these definable conversations. This suggests that there was a relatively high level of communication coordination among the people in this room—as a characteristic of their connectivity and interpersonal relationships. Other topics of conversation in this chat room included: football, sex, talk about daily routines, and working out. There were also many minor conversations arranging for a few of the chat room members to meet, offline. Examples of these included, “lol come eat with me and trudy wed” or “AZIAN..I JUST MADE SOME EGGROLLS…WANNA COME OVER?” or “There is a bar its called rack daddy’s meet me in 45 minutes.” Overall, this strongly suggests that the types of relationships by more people in this observation were more complex and more extensive than demonstrated in the other chat rooms. Other expressions of familiarity included the ways in which people flirted. In the observations where people were not as connected, the flirting tended to be restricted to things like, “M lookin’ for lovin’ in Other City.” Here, flirting was more complex and involved more people, for example: YourFavoriteBong: HEY RICAN I HAVE EQUAL BLACK, HISPANIC, AND WHITE LADY FREINDS PrettyLilAzian: SARCASTIC WHY YourFavoriteBong: I LOVE TO PINCH THE BLACK BABES ChrisTinEXAS: nothing much just cracked out YourFavoriteBong: CAUSE MAN THEY GOT BACK CAVAZOS27: ((((((((((((((((((Kim))))))))))))))))))))))) Scrdykat801: no what andrew? Sarcastic RuLer: cause he sucks Talon9413: i dont know just NO PrettyLilAzian: HES MY BRO Jaded Erotka: BABY GOT BACK
