East Asian Modernities and Localized Media and Cultural Studies
Unformatted Document Text:  X^ materialistic consumption, self-realization through possession, the production style that is exploiting the nature to the extreme degree, more competition than cooperation, globally expanding inequality, and American-styled streamlining that focuses on efficiency only, etc. These contradictions are what we describe as part of issue from the worldwide dominance neo-liberalist capitalism that regulates and influences the lives of most of us in this modern era when rapid globalization is continuing apace is going on. Even regarding in the news, documentary programs, and TV dramas, it has become global culture that people want to realize themselves through consumer commodities. The new liberalist corporate culture and labor culture that puts productive efficiency first rather than welfare have become global economic cultures. The most important thing is that the Western modernity is still serving as a reference to almost every society in Asia in the process of establishing and developing social institutions and operational rule making. This is what we call the “coloniality” that is influencing on the formation of Asian modernity. This differs from simply insisting that Hollywood movies are dominating Asian film markets; that the McDonald’s and Coca Cola are standardizing Asian youngsters’ tastes. It is more involved with fundamental questions such as the whole way of life that defines the conditions of human existence, how to live and how to realize ourselves. Japanese television programs and local tastes are strongly supported. The Mitzukoshi Department Store in Tokyo has innumerable kinds of foods, clothes, and furniture with the flavor of Japanese traditional culture.
