More importantly, such a paradigm of life is not being forced on us by anybody else but is learnt at our own free wills. So it is not imperialistic enforcement. People do not refuse long working hours of labor and are ready to give up their own lives for a materialistic consumption. People work hard to consume more and to possess more. There are in a constant worry about if they get laid-off from their companies And when they lose their jobs, the whole family gets driven into a crisis. 9 It is not just a matter of McDonalization or how many hamburgers we have; but it is more about the whole world accepting the American-styled based as it is on consumption, materialistic way of self-realization, and the productivity-centered goal of social organizations. The United States has been the frame of reference for the East Asian way of life as well as providing models for ways of operating social institutions. Lastly, the hybridization thesis is partly reasonable. There is no doubt that hybridity always occurs in the process of cultural exchange since we, human beings, are not fools. One culture cannot simply dominate another. Each culture creates its own cultural forms by appropriating the aspects of other cultures. The thesis of hybridization, including the proposition of and ”no cultural domination,” is tenable. However, an unequal relationship still exists in terms of social and cultural exchanges between the West and East Asia. The historical opposition between the West and the Rest still continues.
