The British cultural studies, including Stuart Hall, at the time, was not considered as a theoretical endeavor for going beyond economic or class determinism in explaining the post-war British social order. As Hall’s study of Thatcherism demonstrated, British Cultural Studies has tried to answer why the workers supported Major Margaret Thatcher whose economic and welfare policies worked against their class interests. Due to the focus on the theoretical discussion and little concerns with local cultural politics, Mori and Okuma point out that Japanese Cultural Studies got concentrated on the text-centered analyses of ideology critique. When mapped as an interdisciplinary, Japanese cultural studies are clearly distinguished from deconstructionism, post-structuralism, and postmodern theories of philosophy, which were introduced as literary theories and philosophical theories. As Japan has had researchers who have dealt with these European theories themselves in the fields of art and philosophy, whether it is those of Derrida or Baudrillard, it was translated and introduced right away.
