Due to the democratization movements, which were strong from the middle of the 1980s, the dictatorial regimes of South Korea and Taiwan could no longer politically control the masses with Cold War ideologies. And, during this process, many new leftist theories of Europe and the U.S. were translated and introduced. Until the mid-1980s, in South Korea and Taiwan, no leftist theory books, including The Capital by Marx and Engels could be openly published, and their imports was were prohibited. 6 For both South Korea and Taiwan, the year 1987 was a climactic moment toward the advent of political democratization to be materialized. In South Korea, a military dictatorship that lasted over thirty years was ceased.
