An Invisible Leverage in the Adoption of Online Social Support Community

Then, all the data in Excel worksheet were sorted by the column of poster’s Yahoo ID. In some groups, Yahoo ID was not available. In these cases, poster’s name was used instead of Yahoo ID for sorting. The column of posting dates contained day and date together. Day information was unnecessary for calculating the duration of online presence of each poster, so it was deleted. By using the function of ‘text to columns’ in ‘Data’, day information was separated from the date into a separate column and then it was deleted. Third, the column of poster’s ID (or poster’s name in some cases) and the column of posting date were selected. By the function of ‘PivotTable and PivotChart Report’, the Pivot table was constructed. At the third step of Pivot table construction, ‘Layout’ was modified. The field button was dragged to the left in the diagram once and to the right three times. The property of the second field button was changed into the minimum number and the third field button was changed into the maximum number.

Appendix B-1
Constructing MS Excel Pivot table for collecting group data
First, all of the pages in the list of postings, which contained the posting number, posting subject,
poster’s name, poster’s Yahoo ID, posting date and posting size, are copied from each group’s archive
and then pasted into MS Excel worksheet. Then, all the data in Excel worksheet were sorted by the
column of poster’s Yahoo ID. In some groups, Yahoo ID was not available. In these cases, poster’s name
was used instead of Yahoo ID for sorting.
The column of posting dates contained day and date together. Day information was unnecessary
for calculating the duration of online presence of each poster, so it was deleted. By using the function of
‘text to columns’ in ‘Data’, day information was separated from the date into a separate column and then
it was deleted.
Third, the column of poster’s ID (or poster’s name in some cases) and the column of posting date
were selected. By the function of ‘PivotTable and PivotChart Report’, the Pivot table was constructed. At
the third step of Pivot table construction, ‘Layout’ was modified. The field button was dragged to the left
in the diagram once and to the right three times. The property of the second field button was changed into
the minimum number and the third field button was changed into the maximum number.
