Beyond cultural boundary: An empirical study of the third culture theory
Unformatted Document Text:  Third Culture Theory 17 Unit of analysis might be an issue in regards to third culture theory. One of the ideal situations for this study is to get enough samples to use international married “couple” instead of “individual” as the unit of analysis. Unfortunately, this study only got three couples, which was not good enough to analyze at a couple level. This study solely depended on the individual’s perception toward the third culture variables instead of relationship itself. The subjects of this study are individuals, especially people in international marriage or cohabitation with foreign partners. Married or cohabitated partners (homogeneous or heterogeneous in nationality) are unique interpersonal relations in which national culture might not be a critical factor. Affection would be the dominant factor to consider. Another good way to examine the third culture building would be other subjects in business oriented relationships such as managers-workers in multinational organizations or employees under one company merged by two different companies. The third-culture building process can be involved in various operations in multinational organizations and merged companies in nature. A controlling variable such as adaptation is an important step for future research. Third culture theory starts with the assumption that traditional adaptation or acculturation theory only explains one aspect of intercultural communication that is focused on one culture’s subjugation to or dominance over another culture. To some researchers, the attributes of the third culture are regarded as those of adaptation or acculturation. To examine the third culture not to be reduced to adaptation, controlling adaptation as a third variable will be a next step for future study.

Unit of analysis might be an issue in regards to third culture theory. One of the
ideal situations for this study is to get enough samples to use international married
“couple” instead of “individual” as the unit of analysis. Unfortunately, this study only got
three couples, which was not good enough to analyze at a couple level. This study solely
depended on the individual’s perception toward the third culture variables instead of
relationship itself.
The subjects of this study are individuals, especially people in international
marriage or cohabitation with foreign partners. Married or cohabitated partners
(homogeneous or heterogeneous in nationality) are unique interpersonal relations in
which national culture might not be a critical factor. Affection would be the dominant
factor to consider. Another good way to examine the third culture building would be
other subjects in business oriented relationships such as managers-workers in
multinational organizations or employees under one company merged by two different
companies. The third-culture building process can be involved in various operations in
multinational organizations and merged companies in nature.
A controlling variable such as adaptation is an important step for future research.
Third culture theory starts with the assumption that traditional adaptation or acculturation
theory only explains one aspect of intercultural communication that is focused on one
culture’s subjugation to or dominance over another culture. To some researchers, the
attributes of the third culture are regarded as those of adaptation or acculturation. To
examine the third culture not to be reduced to adaptation, controlling adaptation as a third
variable will be a next step for future study.
