Assessing Media Exemplars and Shifting Journalistic Paradigms: A Survey Study of China’s Journalists

The rise of the so-called “investigative reporting” under the Party control since the mid 1990s is a clear example (Zhao, 2000b). Therefore, journalists’ interpretive and popular advocacy roles, instead of opposing each other, are often seen to express the same principle with different emphases. Their expected relationships with appraising party-organ exemplars are expressed in the following hypothesis: H 3b Beliefs in interpretive and popular advocacy roles of the news media are positively related to positive appraisals of the domestic party-organ media. Given H 2 , H 3a and H 3b can be extended to the Southern Weekend and Xinmin Evening: H 3c beliefs in disseminator and adversarial roles of the news media are positively related to positive appraisals of the Southern Weekend; and H 3d beliefs in interpretive and popular advocacy roles of the news media are positively related to positive appraisals of the Xinmin Evening.
