Gathering Together to Smash the State: An Analysis of Rhetorical Artifacts from the 2002 North American Anarchist Gathering
Unformatted Document Text:  Gathering 10 communitarian view of anarchism has emerged. From this viewpoint there is a push for local, no growth, ecologically sound economies (Schecter, 1994). The previous theories only scratch the surface of the ideology of anarchism as it has progressed through time and as it exists today. In the United States the ideas of anarchism have been as unpopular, if not more so, than communism—much of this has to do with the McCarthy era driving radical thought deep underground or eradicating it entirely (Weir, 1997). Despite the fact that McCarthyism drove radical thought in the United States underground many of the tenets of anarchism can be seen today—Brecher, Costello, and Smith (2000) and Starr (2000) cite the democratic globalization movement as an aspect of society where these ideals thrive. During the major protests anarchist strategies are used to organize groups for particular purposes and are decentralized and self-sufficient. The major points of planning and organization for these major events take place in a plethora of different places: churches, schools, peoples’ homes. One such organizing event was the North American Anarchist Gathering in Lawrence, Kansas. The North American Anarchist Gathering Comes to Lawrence, Kansas Oh, to be an anarchist in the conservative Midwest! Originally the North American Anarchist Convention, the event name was changed from “convention” to “gathering” after the 2000 convention in Los Angeles. The change was made to reflect the nature of anarchism— seeing as how conventions are a capitalist phenomenon it seemed rather contradictory. The convention/gathering was organized for the purpose of giving anarchists an opportunity to network, exchange narratives and ideas, and to educate each other about the abuses US corporations perpetuate against the rest of the world.
