Gathering Together to Smash the State: An Analysis of Rhetorical Artifacts from the 2002 North American Anarchist Gathering
Unformatted Document Text:  Gathering 13 pamphlet suggests that workers perform work slowdowns and sit-downs, work to the letter of every rule to slow down production, blow the whistle on crimes and infractions committed by managers, organize to use sick-days all at once, and monkey-wrenching. According to the IWW all of these tactics are valuable, but the most important tactic lies in organization of workers. All of the tactics discussed here depend for their success on solidarity, on the coordinated actions of a large number of workers. Individual acts of sabotage offer little more than a fleeting sense of revenge (which may admittedly be all that keeps you sane on a bad day at work). But for a real feeling of collective empowerment, there’s nothing quite like direct action by a large number of disgruntled workers to make your day. (Industrial Workers of the World) The second major pamphlet that I found at the gathering was entitled “Beginners Guide to Responsible Sexuality (for men).” According to a disclaimer found in the pamphlet the material was produced by an unnamed anarchist collective situated in the Denver area. The content of the pamphlet describes sexual discrimination that “womyn” face from the patriarchy and what men should do to reverse many of these problems. The creators’ of the pamphlet have gone so far in addressing issues of the patriarchy as to change the spelling of woman/women to wommin/womyn—the idea being that “womyn” do not want to be perceived as an extension of “men.” In this current era of our global culture of patriarchy (male domination) which alienates people into roles that accompany those genders—wimmin submissive/men dominating— we find a very dramatic level of inequality. Since men play the oppressor it becomes necessary for us to become accountable for our actions/mistakes. It is our responsibility

All of the tactics discussed here depend for their success on solidarity, on the coordinated
actions of a large number of workers. Individual acts of sabotage offer little more than a
fleeting sense of revenge (which may admittedly be all that keeps you sane on a bad day

The second major pamphlet that I found at the gathering was entitled “Beginners Guide
to Responsible Sexuality (for men).” According to a disclaimer found in the pamphlet the
material was produced by an unnamed anarchist collective situated in the Denver area. The
content of the pamphlet describes sexual discrimination that “womyn” face from the patriarchy
and what men should do to reverse many of these problems. The creators’ of the pamphlet have
gone so far in addressing issues of the patriarchy as to change the spelling of woman/women to
wommin/womyn—the idea being that “womyn” do not want to be perceived as an extension of
“men.”
In this current era of our global culture of patriarchy (male domination) which alienates
people into roles that accompany those genders—wimmin submissive/men dominating—
we find a very dramatic level of inequality. Since men play the oppressor it becomes
necessary for us to become accountable for our actions/mistakes. It is our responsibility
