Gathering Together to Smash the State: An Analysis of Rhetorical Artifacts from the 2002 North American Anarchist Gathering
Unformatted Document Text:  Gathering 14 as people who identify as experiencing male privilege to deconstruct internalized ways of thinking and acting towards wimmin as well as how we think and act towards each other. The pamphlet goes on to discuss sex and attitudes about sex as a first major step in addressing the issues of oppression. Men should respect the boundaries of “womyn” and make steps toward responsible sexuality. Responsible sexuality begins with realization that pornography is not representative of sex, that drugs and alcohol have no place in sexual relations, and that sex must be mutually satisfying. There is great emphasis on the latter issue because in sexual relationships both partners should be viewed as equal. The final pamphlet that I came away with from the gathering was a newsletter entitled “After the Fall” produced by a New York city anarchist collective that shares the same name. In this issue of “After the Fall” there are accounts of the efforts by activists to transform the Cabo Rojo area of New York city into a community garden, how that effort was met by authorities, and the activists’ reaction to the authorities. Also, the issue recounts an anarchist’s trip to Israel and the Gaza Strip. The story tells of the contrast between the depictions of how Palestinians are perceived to be versus what they are like in person as the author of this piece was exposed to both. The underlying intention was to draw parallels between these two situations. So, the loose theme of this issue has been the connection of amazing local projects with the support for global uprisings and resistance: call it Permanent Autonomous Zones meet Intifada. We’re growing in confidence and recognizing the importance of permanent infrastructure. Some people are out travelling, some are settling in the City and others are heading half way across the world (learn more about the “Freedom Summer” in Palestine at http://www.palsolidarity.org) . Our resistances are intertwined, our victories are collective. Spring is here. (After the Fall)
