The Narrative of the North American Anarchist Gathering
Now that the concepts of identity, cultural values, and political community have been
illustrated in the pamphlets found at the North American Anarchist Gathering it is possible to
look at the constitutive narrative that was woven through all of the pamphlets and the gathering
itself. The narrative is about a clash of cultures and personalities. In the background it the
culture of capitalism; this is a culture of oppression through economic, sexual, and racial
discrimination. Workers are manipulated for their labor, women are reduced to sexual objects,
and certain racial/cultural groups such as the Palestinians are kept in prison like conditions
because they are deemed to be less than human by the followers of the capitalist ideology.
When we ventured the ten miles from West Jerusalem to the Palestinian city of Ramallah,
we entered an entirely different world where people’s lives are controlled by an
occupying army. To enter Ramallah you must cross three different checkpoints and then
wait hours in traffic just to go a few hundred feet. The routine holdup at these
checkpoints has led to miscarriages of many women and to the deaths of others on the
way to the hospital. (After the Fall)
This backdrop of oppression and injustice is the basis for creating a new lifestyle; one in
which all people are treated equally and fairly. The rejection of the oppressive, hierarchical
thinking of the capitalist worldview will result in a richer, more fulfilling life. Community bonds
will be stronger in terms of people and the environment, sexual relationships will be more
fulfilling and respectful, and work/labor will be fair.
As this rejection of capitalism is not a society-wide phenomenon it is important that
anarchists stand in solidarity to fight against the oppression that is faced by every human being
under capitalism. Because of the strong belief in fair and equal treatment of each human being it
