Effects of Helper and Recipient Sex on the Experience and Outcomes of Comforting Messages: An Experimental Investigation
Unformatted Document Text:  Effects of Helper and Recipient Sex 30 Second, the sample used for this experiment was largely homogeneous in terms of age, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. Gender might moderate effects of nonverbal immediacy and person centeredness more strongly in (a) a more heterogeneous sample or (b) among specific ages, social classes, or ethnicities. Thus, future research should explore the moderating effects of sex on effects of comforting messages in more heterogeneous samples. Finally, the comforting interactions in this study were brief, typically lasting about five minutes. It is possible that gender differences might emerge as significant moderators of the effects of nonverbal immediacy and person centeredness only in longer, more sustained interactions. This possibility should also be explored in future research.
