. Permits were acquired for holding multiple demonstrations; these included a protest outside
the Gap Thursday and, the biggest event, a march heading east on 59th Street and turning south
down Lexington Avenue Saturday (Baker, 2002a). Just as participants at a conference are given
a program and helpful visitor information on arrival, demonstrators who entered the Welcome
Center at the East Sixth Street Community Center were provided with assistance for their stay.
There were flyers listing the events: in addition to the sixteen scheduled protests over the five
days, events included workshops on civil rights, meetings to make signs and plan protest actions,
and a counter summit to be held at Columbia University.
