Representations of Race and Sexuality on Feminist Web Sites
Unformatted Document Text:  Representations of Race and Sexuality on Feminist Web Sites 18 issues. Many believe that women are currently enjoying all the rights to which they are entitled: the right to vote, the right to education, rights regarding family, career, credit, marriage, and more. Simone de Beauvoir remarked “feminine literature is in our day animated less by a wish to demand our rights than by an effort toward clarity and understanding.” 30 Organized physical demonstrations are often necessary when trying to push a specific issue, but underlying all change is knowledge. The way that knowledge is created, disseminated, and critiqued will have a dramatic impact on the outcomes of efforts and on the ultimate behavior of women, as well as men, in our society. The Internet provides new opportunities for discussion, education, expression and discourse that have never before been available. The challenge is to continue to open avenues of accessibility to enhance the tone of that expression rather than to constrain it through exclusion, dominance, and silencing of voices. Future studies should critique representations on the Web of marginalized groups and the framing of their utilization of the Web in other media, whether for the purpose of activism or otherwise. More research can be done on the representations of content over time as well as the identification of sites with the most traffic and largest audiences. Additionally, studies of the representations of men on Feminist sites will be necessary to critique the new power dialogues that are being created under feminist theory.
