Furthermore, the use of Bakhtinian concepts pertaining to the connections between ourselves and others, along with Bakhtin’s description of the purposes and offerings of carnival life can help in our development of a theoretical understanding of the underpinnings of EDM and rave culture. In order to explain this process and the intricate connections between EDM and rave culture we must look back and account for the complex and dynamic relationships involved in the development of rave culture and the EDM scene. While rave culture implies the presence of EDM, the reverse is not always the case. As this paper demonstrates, it is possible and increasingly becoming the case that EDM has a strong presence and can thrive outside of the rave scene. However, we must not lose sight of Reynold’s apt observation that even the sub- scenes that explicitly define themselves against rave’s populism are still haunted by the myth and the reality of rave (1999, p. 388). Consequently, similar to the majority of the existing literature on the subject (Martin, 1999; Sicko, 1999; Silcott, 1999), this paper will make explicit reference to the relationship between rave culture and EDM. This paper traces the history of electronic dance music (hereafter EDM) in Detroit. I locate its place within the rave subculture and examine mass media perceptions of the scene to account for possible outcomes of a subculture once it leaves the margins and occupies a space central to popular culture. On the one hand, there are benefits to keeping rave culture underground, such as fans being able to maintain more active participation and control at the grassroots level.
