Figure 1 illustrates the series of activities and events that one might expect
to encounter while visiting the ED at CHC. This chart was created to educate
patients about a typical ED visit and the likely order of events. Without this
knowledge, those expecting ”first come, first serve” service may be troubled to
learn that (for example) patients are seen in order of their criticality, and that
ambulances as a rule have priority over walk-ins. This chart, then, is meant to
reassure patients and their families by improving their understanding of triage
and the emergency care process. The chart is also reflective of the image of
emergency medicine as it is taught in nursing and medical schools.
