Easy elaboration: The subjective experience of message processing and persuasion
Unformatted Document Text:  Subjective Experience 13 points. Finally, respondents were asked to rate the difficulty of the tasks they had completed using seven 7-point, semantic differential items scored such that higher scores indicated greater perceived difficulty, SI α = .96. Items included anchors such as “difficult/not difficult,” “effortful/effortless,” and “tough/easy.” Results The baseline evaluation of photo enforcement was neutral (M = 3.90, SD = 1.64). After reading the persuasive messages, across conditions, participants rated photo enforcement unfavorably (M = 3.22, SD = 1.76). Their evaluations were significantly below the scale’s midpoint, t(66) = -3.63, p < .05, and the baseline assessment, t(66) = -3.17, p < .05. Participants evaluated photo enforcement differently, depending on what message they read. Those who read the message against photo enforcement reported a negative attitude toward photo enforcement (M = 2.40, SD = 1.32). Their negative attitudes were similar to the perceived position of the con message (M = 2.11, SD = 1.69). Participants who read the message favoring photo enforcement reported a neutral attitude toward photo enforcement (M = 4.01, SD = 1.78). Their neutral attitudes were below the perceived position of the pro message (M = 5.73, SD = 2.16), but were similar to baseline attitudes (M = 3.90, SD = 1.64). We predicted that our messages would influence participants’ attitudes toward the messages’ advocated position. Though participants reported attitudes similar to the con message, they did not report attitudes similar to the pro message. Participants perceived the task of listing 3 points of support as easier (M = 2.65, SD = 1.29) than listing 15 points of support (M = 5.11, SD = 1.27), p < .05, r = .70). They also indicated that, on average, 68% could complete the easy task (SD = 26.40) and 44% could complete the difficult task (SD = 29.39), F(1,66) = 12.53, p < .05, r = .40.

Results
The baseline evaluation of photo enforcement was neutral (M = 3.90, SD = 1.64). After
reading the persuasive messages, across conditions, participants rated photo enforcement
unfavorably (M = 3.22, SD = 1.76). Their evaluations were significantly below the scale’s
midpoint, t(66) = -3.63, p < .05, and the baseline assessment, t(66) = -3.17, p < .05.
Participants evaluated photo enforcement differently, depending on what message they
read. Those who read the message against photo enforcement reported a negative attitude
toward photo enforcement (M = 2.40, SD = 1.32). Their negative attitudes were similar to the
perceived position of the con message (M = 2.11, SD = 1.69). Participants who read the message
favoring photo enforcement reported a neutral attitude toward photo enforcement (M = 4.01, SD
= 1.78). Their neutral attitudes were below the perceived position of the pro message (M = 5.73,
SD = 2.16), but were similar to baseline attitudes (M = 3.90, SD = 1.64). We predicted that our
messages would influence participants’ attitudes toward the messages’ advocated position.
Though participants reported attitudes similar to the con message, they did not report attitudes
similar to the pro message.
Participants perceived the task of listing 3 points of support as easier (M = 2.65, SD =
1.29) than listing 15 points of support (M = 5.11, SD = 1.27), p < .05, r = .70). They also
indicated that, on average, 68% could complete the easy task (SD = 26.40) and 44% could
complete the difficult task (SD = 29.39), F(1,66) = 12.53, p < .05, r = .40.
